What is Simparica Trio?

Simparica Trio is the brand name of a veterinary medicine used for treating dogs with fleas, five species of ticks, and two types of parasites in the gut. Simparica Trio is also effective in preventing heartwormandlungworm disease. It contains three active constituents: sarolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel

The medicine is not an over-the-counter medicine and can only be obtained with a prescription from the veterinarian.

The ingredient, sarolaner, is an insecticide(which kills fleas) and an acaricide(which kills ticks and mites). Its mechanism of action involves creating uncontrolled neuromuscular activity leading to the death of ticks and fleas. Some of the ticks it attacks are the gulf coast tick, brown dog tick, deer tick/black-legged tick, American dog tick, and Lone Star tick.

Moxidectin is a parasiticide that kills the larvae of heartworms, while pyrantel is a nematocide that kills worms like hookworms and roundworms.

Benefits of Simparica Trio

The major benefits of Simparica Tiro for dogs include the following:

  • It protects dogs against heartworm disease, ticks and fleas, roundworms and hookworms
  • It is a tasty chewable medicine that can be administered once a month
  • It’s safe for young puppies around eight weeks old

How is Simparica Trio used?

The medicine is a chewable tablet administered to dogs once a month to treat fleas, ticks, and mites.

For the treatment of heartworms, Simparica Trio is administered every month or within the first month of the animal’s exposure to mosquitoes. If a dose is missed, they should resume the medicine immediately.

To prevent flea infestation, Simparica Trio may be administered monthly at any time of the year. Better still, the medicine should be used at least one month before fleas become active. All dogs in the house should undergo treatment with Simparica Trio to prevent a household re-infestation.

Treatments should also be administered monthly for tick and intestinal nematode infestations.

Is Simparica Trio suitable for dogs?

Simparica Trio is suitable for dogs as young as eight weeks old and weighing 2.8 pounds. However, it’s not suitable for pregnant or lactating dogs. Before starting treatment, the dog must be tested for heartworm disease as Simparica Trio doesn’t kill adult heartworms and may worsen the dog’s condition.
